This one day course allows the participants to become familiar with the Microsoft Publisher principles, working with text, images and shapes. Delegates will understand how to use different page formats and adapt pre-made templates, as well as create their own publication.


Delegates should be familiar with the keyboard and Microsoft Windows Operating System. A familiarity of Microsoft Word would be an advantage.

Course details

Designing Publications
Identifying page designs and layout requirements
Templates, house styles, branding, styles, colours and font schemes
Existing styles and schemes for font (typeface), size, orientation, colour and alignment
Using appropriate page design and layout for publications in line with organisational guidelines, where relevant

Inserting information into publications so that it is ready for editing and formatting
Organising and combining information of different types or from different sources
Organising information, size, white space, columns, consistency, orientation
Inserting text, images and graphics

Editing and Formatting Techniques
Identify what editing and formatting to use for the publication
Using techniques to edit publications and format text
Dragging and dropping, find and replace, undo redo, size, use layout guides
Control text flow within single and multiple columns and pages, in columns, around images and graphic elements, between pages
Check publication and making corrections as necessary – spell check; grammar check, completeness, accuracy, orientation, layout, text alignment and formatting

Shapes and Graphic Elements
Images Inserting, sizing and positioning images, text wrap
Shapes Order, grouping shapes: images, text, graphic elements (e.g. borders, lines, panels, shading, logos)
Manipulate images and graphic elements accurately – size, crop and position, maintain proportion, using borders

Saving and Retrieving Publications
Storing and retrieving publication files effectively, in line with local guidelines and conventions where available e.g. create, name, open, save, save as, print, close, find.

Understanding Copyright
Identify copyright constraints on using others’ information, acknowledgment of sources, avoiding plagiarism, permissions
